My Worst Is All I Have

I think my best is my gift,
but my worst is Your desire.

Surely, There Must Be A God

He polishes and refines us,

Until, and only for a moment,

We shine in the world with an unearthly glow

That others may stop and begin to believe that,

If we can shine,

Then surely there must be a God

Poetry gives us permission to feel deeply while still reaching for God.

Each poem begins with Scripture and is followed by a brief summary, writing prompts, reflection questions, and prayer.

Writing Prompts

Rewrite the stanza about the hidden rock using your own story of being “unearthed.”
Describe a time when your life “shined” and pointed someone toward God.

Reflection Questions

• Where in your life do you feel “buried,” unseen, or forgotten?
• What pressures has God used to shape you, even when they hurt?
• What parts of your story reveal God’s polishing work?
• Who in your life needs to see the evidence of God’s refining grace?

Prayer

Lord, reveal the beauty You are shaping in me. Give me patience during the tumbling,
and let my life shine in such a way that someone else says,
‘Surely, there must be a God.’ Amen
