We'll Leave the Light On
There was an ad for Motel Six featuring Tom Bodet. He had a grandfatherly and relaxing way of telling you about the rooms at Motel Six.
Nothing fancy, just a clean, simple, and affordable room for the weary traveler.
And he would end the ads with his signature phrase,
“I’m Tom Bodett and we’ll leave the light on”
There are times when some of us, in our walk with Jesus, need a simple, no-frills place to stay. Times when we only want to hear that Jesus is waiting with a clean, simple room.
Other times we become weary because we wandered away from Him.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The Prodigal Son was a weary traveler who was going the wrong direction. He had chased everything his money could buy, until it ran out. And when it did, so did the world. His life had become a chase for better, newer, more extravagant; instead, he only found desolation and despair. It wasn’t until he was stealing scraps from pigs that he began to realize that he had given everything to the world and the world gave him nothing in return. The only thing he had left was the thought of home.
Home, though, meant giving up this dream and admitting how foolish he had been. The best he could hope for was to become his father’s slave.
No matter how far astray you may find yourself from home, Jesus is waiting with open arms. Even though you may come crawling back—filthy, ashamed and humiliated—you will find, like the prodigal did, that Jesus does not want you to be his slave. He wants a genuine relationship.
You may have left, but Jesus has your room ready. He has left the light on.
